  2. Personal tutoring system • Dean of Students • Faculty Tutor • Departmental Tutor • Personal tutors

  3. SLAIS tutorial responsibilities:

  4. What your personal tutor is for • a friendly, helpful person • a point of reference when in doubt or trouble • all tutors have regular office hours • make contact soon • not there to monitor your progress!

  5. Keeping safe and well • Find and register with a GP • Dentist too (if you need one) • Look after personal possessions!

  6. Keeping in touch • Everyone has an email account - this is the usual way for staff to contact you • there are notice boards for each programme • let us know if contact details change

  7. Things administrative • Student status letters can be obtained from the Registry • allow plenty of time for other paperwork • remember - admin staff need their lunch hours and to go home on time

  8. Student participation • The Staff-Student Consultative Committee has student reps from each programme • students are also represented on the Departmental Library Committee, the Departmental Teaching Committee, & the Departmental Research Committee • most programmes have a meeting once or twice a year for all students • all courses have feedback forms

  9. Common student problems • Special educational needs • getting behind with work • accommodation • financial hardship

  10. What if something goes very badly wrong? • Tell us quickly before it gets out of hand • we’ve heard it all before! • real emergencies
