  4. Why? • Remember more easily • Reference textual evidence • Time saver • Decode difficult material • Encourages you to HAVE AN OPINION

  5. How? • Note (one word reminders) • Comment (longer - like/dislike/significance) • Symbols (!, , , ?) • Highlight (explanation is helpful)

  6. “Thirteen and a Half” • Focus question: Where can we find each element of plot? • Focus question: What are your opinions on the characters? • Focus question: So what? What do we learn/get out of reading this?

  7. Code • ? – If you have a question or don’t understand •  - If you like what happened and/or the way something is worded •  - If you dislike what happened • ! – If you were surprised or shocked • * - If you come across something you think is important or you want to remember
