What do you know about diversity and cultural competence? • You must explain to your students what you know about cultural diversity and cultural competence. • Choose one of three tasks that reflect the three intelligences identified by Sternberg (1985) to do this: • Write the definition of diversity and cultural competence. • Explain what being culturally competent looks, feels, and sounds like. • Draw what diversity and/or cultural competence means to you and what you perceive it to mean to your students.
Share and Discuss Why did you choose your method of response? Identify which of the three intelligences your choice falls within (creative, analytical, practical). How did having a choice make you feel about the task?
The Sneetches How did you feel when you did not receive a star or a treat? Did you feel left out when the readers turned their backs to you so you couldn't see the book? How do you think the other students felt?
RAFT (Role/Audience/Format/Topic) Activity Reflect on the theme of The Sneetches using one of the options for different topics or format.
Group Discussion • Share your work in groups and discuss the essential question: • How might prejudice and discrimination affect teaching and learning?
