How to Get Started With Advanced Control Terry Blevins Principal Technologist
A Starting Point - Model Predictive Control DeltaV Model Predictive control may be implemented at no cost using the MPC block (no license required) if only one manipulated output is utilized. This capability may be used to address loops with difficult dynamics that can not be effectively addressed using PID. A chapter in Advanced Control Unleashed is dedicated to Model Predictive Control. The book CD provides an overview video for each section and examples. The ability to replace PID with Model Predictive control is addressed in chapter 14 of Control Loop Foundation. Class 7201 dedicates over one day to model predictive control in DeltaV. A new class, Control Loop Foundation - Course 9025, Is available through the education department starting in Feb, 2011.
Addressing Difficult Dynamics • Best results will be achieved when the process time to steady state is 30 seconds or longer. • Automatically takes process deadtime into account.
Addressing Measured Disturbances • As many as four (4) measured distubances may be included in the MPC block. • Dynamic compensation is automatically provided by the MPC block
Addressing Constraints • As many as four(4) constraint may be included in the MPC block • Step responses are automatically determined based on automated testing.
How to Get More Information Emerson Education Class Control Loop Foundation, Course 9025 CEUs: 3.2 This course is for engineers, managers, technicians, and others that are new to process control or need a refresher course. This course includes the practical aspects of control design and process applications that course developers personally learned through years of hands on experience while designing and commissioning process control applications. Overview This 4-1/2 day course covers the concepts and terminology that are needed to understand and work with control systems. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to effectively work with and commission single and multi-loop control strategies. Interactive workshops allow the student to apply what they learn in the class. Prerequisites Windows experience.
