  2. MAIN PROBLEM Reviewing the English 101 Program for Technology Students of Siquijor State College: Basis for an ESP Syllabus

  3. Rationale • It is the responsibility of the academics to review the implemented curricula for educational change and school improvement. • Educators do not merely design and implement curriculum. According to Richards and Renandya (2002) educators define and refine the curriculum; they interpret and transform the curriculum in a way that turns learning into a more manageable activity for the learners.

  4. Rationale • In other words, it is what teachers plan and practice at the classroom level that eventually determines what learners learn in the classroom. • Graves (2000) stresses that teachers who teach along with explicit curriculum guidelines can be active enforcers in the courses they teach if they are aware about what the processes are and how they can take responsibility for them.

  7. Main Problem: Reviewing the English 101 Program for Technology Students of Siquijor State College: Basis for an ESP Syllabus

  8. Conclusion The study concludes that the language skills prioritized and taught in the current English 101 program do not match the technology students’ needs especially from the perspective of the content area teachers and the prospective employers. These results strongly support the proposal for an ESP syllabus design.

  9. Recommendation Educators 1. Learners should be exposed to various authentic learning activities and materials which prepare them to ‘real life’ encounters both in personal and professional undertakings. 2. Learning should be planned and guided to ensure meaningful and effective absorption of lessons. 3. The teachers should be zealous to pursue their own professional development by engaging in continuing or in-service education. 4. Teachers, as curriculum designers, should refer to the guidelines of the national language policy-making body and the needs of the institution/company where the learners may eventually practice their profession. 5. Teachers should be critically receptive to innovations and changes in approaches and methodology such as the proposed English for Specific Purposes (ESP) English 101 syllabus for technology students at SSC.

  10. Recommendation Other Researchers 1. Future researchers in other institutions may replicate this study for purposes of comparison. 2. Research enthusiasts should give equal importance on quantitative and qualitative approaches of research. 3. Researchers are encouraged to use branching or triangulation method in their researches for substantial results.
