Personal Life John Von Neumann was born on December 28, 1903 in Budapest ,Hungary (Andras Frank was also born there) and died on February 8, 1957 from cancer. He was oldest of 3 children of a banker. He learned things very quickly when he was young. Examples are that when he was 6 he could divide two 8-digit numbers in his head, when he was eight he had already mastered calculus an at 12 he was in a graduate level in Math. His father wanted him to be something other than a Mathematician, so he decided to go to Berlin and Zurich to study Chemistry and then he went to Budapest to study mathematics. When he was 23 he had a degree in chemical engineering and a PhD in math. Neumann never actually needed to fall back on chemistry. The next 3 years he went to work on the field of operator theory then went to work on the quantum theory.
World War II and Neumann • Neumann’s interest changed a lot during and after World War II. • Until 1940 Neumann was a pure mathematician who had made some theoretical contributions in physics. • During/after the war he became an applied mathematician. When engineers were at Los Alamos to figure out how to make atomic fuel explode, Neumann came up with a solution-implosion. • He then had time to create the game theory. A major contribution in the first half of the 20th century. • During the end of the war Neumann went to help with developing computing machines. It was his own idea to store the program in the machine as another kind of electronic data. Before that time if you wanted to reprogram a computer the person had to rewire it themselves. Computers that perform their tasks sequentially are named “von Neumann machines”.
