British Voting Reform : Parliament=House of Lords, & House of Commons Commons were elected, but only 5% of the population could vote (Large Landholding Men) Suffrage: Middle class (factory owners, bankers, etc.) demand right to vote Reform Bill of 1832: Made it possible for all reasonably wealthy men to vote (still small percentage)
Suffrage Expands • Chartists: People’s Charter of 1838. • Workers and other non-wealthy men demand right to vote (in secret), and ask to eliminate property requirement of parliament. (All passed by early 1900’s) • By 1884 most adult men in GB could vote. • Women still could not vote until after WWI(Emmeline Pankhurst & the WSPU)
France & Democracy • 1871-1914 France is in chaos after the Franco-Prussian War (lose Alsace-Lorriane, reparations) • Over a dozen political parties compete for power • 1875: National Assembly finally votes to create a republic (The Third Republic) • Dreyfus Affair: False conviction of Alfred Dreyfus exposes European anti-Semitism, and leads Theodore Herzl to advocate Zionism
Self Rule for British Colonies • Wealth generated by the I.R. made some colonies strong enough to want to rule themselves • Canada: British/French tensions. Central government established and self rule enacted in late 1800’s • Australia: Began as a British prison colony (1788). Wool industry & gold rush (& cheap land) encouraged regular British citizens to relocate. Self rule established in 1850’s. • New Zealand: Annexed by GB (from Maori natives) in 1840. Self rule established in 1850’s.
Irish Home Rule • Irish nationalism conflicted with British rule for centuries. • Potato famine of 1840’s: 1845-1848 One million Irish die of starvation (1.5 million more leave Ireland). British Gov. enforces rent demands of British land owners. • Some Irish demand independence, others demand Home Rule • GB hesitant to enact home rule—Ulster. Delayed by WWI • IRA • Ireland partitioned in 1921—Home rule granted to southern Ireland. • Eamon De Valera—Republic of Ireland (1949)
