  2. Magpie I’m going to read aloud a fairy tale from Sweden about a boy who always wanted things he did not have.

  3. Salt on a Bird’s Tail: A Swedish Fairy Tale

  5. It’s time for . . . These are words . . . We use them for . . . Vocabulary we want to know Reading, writing, listening, & speaking!

  6. appetite: the desire for food; hunger

  7. chores: small jobs usually done on a regular schedule

  8. harvested: picked or gathered

  9. hitched: tied on or fastened by a knot, ring, or hook

  10. plow: to break up and turn over dirt so that seeds can be planted

  11. sown: scattered or planted

  12. tended: look after; took care of

  13. Predict and Infer • I can predict what happens as the dragon grows up. I can infer from the cover that the dragon is young at the beginning. I think that a dragon would be harder to raise as they get older.

  14. Drawing Conclusions I can use story details to figure out something the author does not state directly by constructing a graphic organizer of conclusions.

  21. Drawing Conclusions • Sometimes readers draw conclusions about story events by organizing story details. Look at page 371 in your reading book. I want you to create your own chart using page 371. Draw conclusions about how Ma feels about Hank.

  22. Suffixes –y and -ly • A suffixes is added to the end of a base word. Carefully I rolled the egg into the cave. He did have a healthy appetite! -ly means “in a certain way” -y means “full of”
