Triple science Work rate faster 6 exams 3 GCSEs achieved Double science More time on concepts 4 exams 2 GCSEs achieved Triple or double science?
Which course? • We will enter all students in sets 1-3 for both Science exams in January. • It will test their knowledge of 2 units of work from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. • They will receive a Science GCSE from these exams.
March – exam results in school • We will analyse the exam results and decide whether students should either • follow the Triple Science course as they are coping well and likely to achieve an A* - C grade in all three sciences. • change to the Double Science course where the work rate will be more suited to their ability and increase the chance of students achieving 2 A*- C grades.
Can do tasks • These are tasks/experiments that students carry out during lessons. • How can you help? - Ensure you child is in school as much as possible
Science in the news • This is a report that students write under supervised conditions in school. • They are given a title to research • Some examples are
Should the use of cannabis be legalised?’ Biology titles Should we worry about Bird Flu affecting humans in the UK?’ Should whale hunting be banned?’ Should old people be allowed to drive?’ Cosmetic surgery – a life saver or image makeover?’
Chemistry titles ‘Is aspirin still a wonder drug, or is it over-rated?’ Should we recycle more copper from mobile phones?’ ‘Should we stop giving crisps and chips to young children?’ Are supermarkets green enough?’ ‘Should we ban salt from all processed food?’ Are congestion zones a good idea?’
Physics titles ‘Will fitting a child safety seat save lives?’ Do high voltage power lines pose a risk to health?’ ‘Is human activity responsible for increased global warming?’ ‘Does the UK need new Nuclear Power stations?’ ‘Are asteroids a threat? How safe are mobile phones? Should we spend time in the Sun?’
preparation • Students carry out research into the topic. • They analyse the sources they find. • Is the source reliable? Why? Why not? • Students draw a graph and describe the trends and anomalies. • Students decide what effect their information has on • The economy • The environment or • Society
In school • In lesson time students write up their report, discussing the information they have found and drawing a conclusion that answers the original question.
How can you help? • Students need access to the internet to research the question.
How you can help 1) Make sure your child has a revision guide Available from school, £3.10 (cheaper than town) 2) Help your child devise a revision timetable that they can stick to 3) Help them revise – test them, ask them to explain things to you etc REMEMBER THERE ARE 2 SCIENCE EXAMS IN JANUARY AND THESE WILL DETERMINE WHICH COURSE STUDENTS FOLLOW.
Data task • Pupils will do an experiment at school • They are assessed on their write up. This includes • Drawing a graph • Analysing the trends in the graph • Drawing a conclusion from their results • Explaining their conclusion using scientific knowledge • Evaluating the procedure they used.
