The Citadel’s Policy on Sexual Harassment “All employees and students are entitled to a positive learning and working environment free of any type of sexual harassment. The Citadel's administration has zero tolerance for any form of sexual harassment or sexual violence. In severe instances, cadets may be expelled or employees may have their employment terminated.”
Sexual harassment: • Includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature • Is frequently a display of formal or informal power intended to demean, embarrass, intimidate, or coerce a person • Usually targets women, but individuals from both genders are sexually harassed • Can occur between members of the same gender
There are two types of Sexual Harassment: • Quid pro quo harassment -- “this for that” • Hostile environment (most common form)
Leadership and Individual Responsibilities Any person in a supervisory or command position who uses or condones any form of sexual behavior… And/or any employee or student who makes deliberate or repeated unwelcome verbal comments, gestures, or physical contact of a sexual nature in the academic classroom, barracks, or work place… is engaging in sexual harassment.
Examples of Sexual Harassment VERBAL: • “Honey”, “Babe”, “Dear”, or “Sweetheart” • Cat calls, whistles, or sexually degrading comments • Sexually degrading language or profanity • Telling jokes of a sexual nature • Asking about other’s sex life NON-VERBAL: • “Elevator eyes” • Blowing kisses, licking lips, winking • Cartoons, pictures, novelties, or other visual aides • Touching or rubbing oneself PHYSICAL: • Touching, patting, stroking • Grabbing, bumping, pinching • Hugging, kissing • Cornering, blocking passage • Unsolicited back or knee rubs
Same Sex Sexual Harassment Anyone may file a complaint of sexual harassment regardless of the gender of the alleged offender. Allegations based upon a person’s sexual orientation should immediately be referred to the Office of the Commandant.

Situations to report… • Inappropriate jokes/comments • Physical or sexual threats • Unwanted sexual advances or requests • Invasion of personal space and/or privacy • Training “after hours” –no training allowed after TAPS • Be suspicious of “training” behind closed doors and being separated from others
