1. Sulfonyl urea 2nd time Very large and very important family!!!
First family developed with use rates in the fractions of an ounce/acre.
Early SUs were for broadleaf weed control, now there are those for grass control!!!
At first, the SUs could only be used on small grains (mostly wheat), now they can be used on cotton, soybeans, peanuts, corn, sorghum, rice, alfalfa, and others
MOA is single site inhibits the ALS/AHAS enzyme systems. Valine, leucine, & isoleucine. Acetolactate synthase and acetohydroxyacid synthase .
Many weeds have developed resistance 1 MOA
2. More Sulfonyl urea 2nd time Most have both foliar and soil activity
Do not photodecompose and are not volatile.
Will undergo chemical hydrolysis in the soil or even a spray tank if the pH is low (acid)
Weakly adsorbed to soil so they can leach
Adsorption decreases as pH increases, conversely, adsorption increases as pH decreases (remind you of any other family??)
Solubility is also lower at lower pHs
There are use restrictions in high pH soils!!!
Half-life in soil varies from 5 days to 140 days!
3. Even More Sulfonyl urea 2nd time Many crop rotational restrictions years!! Read the label before use if crop rotation is wanted
With all of the pre-mixes, reading the label is very important.
Many of these products are sold by the same company under multiple trade names to fit multiple markets obviously priced differently!
Do NOT use SUs with a systemic organophosphate insecticide/nematicide or severe crop injury will occur (mostly corn)
4. Thifensulfuron - Pinnacle POST use only in soybeans
Poses the least problem with rotational crop than any SU
Shortest residual life
Any crop can be planted 45 days after application
5. Sulfosulfuron Maverick & Outrider Maverick
PRE and POST use in CO, KS, NE, OK, TX, & WY
Cheat control!!! Is also active on some broadleaf weed.
DO NOT alter spray solution with surfactants or fertilizer such that the pH is 5 or below!
Outrider
Roadsides!!!!
6. Imidazolinone EXACTLY the same MOA as SUs!!!!!
There is cross resistance with SUs
Controls both grasses and broadleaf weeds
Many rotational restrictions
Many of the same symptoms as SUs
All have soil activity, some also have POST activity
IR Corn, non GMO crop
Used on small grains, peanuts, soybeans, alfalfa, turf, sunflower. NOT sorghum or cotton. MANY DO NOTS ON LABELS.
7. Imidazolinone (Learn)
8. Imazethapyr Pursuit, NewPath
9. Imazethapyr Pursuit, NewPath Peanuts, soybeans, alfalfa, IR corn (Clearfield)
PPI, PRE, & POST
Controls many broadleaf weeds and some grasses
Not real good on nutsedges
10. Imazapyr Arsenal, Chopper, Contain, Habitat, Stalker
11. Imazapyr Arsenal & Chopper Arsenal nonselective control of annual and perennial grass and broadleaf weeds
Best when applied POST
Will control field bindweed and poison ivy
Use rate in the range of .75 to 1.5 lb ai/A
Chopper many of same uses.
12. Imazamethabenz - Assert
13. Assert Used on small grains, but NOT OK there is a grazing restriction
Applied POST with a surfactant
No sugar beets for 20 mo!
14. Imazamox - Beyond
15. Imazamox - Beyond For use on only Clearfield wheat and canola
These are imidazolinone tolerant varieties
Mostly broadleaf weed control
DO NOT use on non Clearfield varieties!!!
16. Imazaquin Scepter, Image
17. Imazaquin - Scepter, Image First Imidazolinone commercially developed
Scepter broadleaf weed control in soybeans
Applied PPI, PRE, and POST
Very effective on many serious broadleaf weeds and really replaced many other herbs
Image used for weed control in zoysiagrass, bermudagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and selected ornamentals
18. Imazamox - Raptor
19. Imazamox - Raptor For use in soybeans only POST
Only a 3 mo rotational restriction to plant wheat so this fits nicely with a double-crop system
20. Imazapic Cadre & Plateau No structure
Used on peanuts only!!! Early POST
Good for both yellow and purple nutsedge
Rotation restriction of 40 mo on sugar beets, canola, potatoes. 18 mo restriction on cotton and grain sorghum
Plateau - turf
21. Pyridinone Pigment inhibitors white plants
Soil applied now, will drift and make plants white
Annual grass & broadleaf weed control in cotton, peas, & pumpkins. Velvetleaf control!
When used with cotton you MUST use an in-furrow organophosphate insecticide
Soil carry-over, drift, uncontrolled weeds
Wheat 12 mo, house plants, CB, MG, PW
Weeds resistant to triazines are resistant
22. Clomazone - Command
23. Norflurazon Zorial, Solicam
24. Zorial, Solicam Grass and broadleaf weed control in cotton, peanuts, soybeans & alfalfa (Solicam turf)
PPI or PRE, NOT POST
Will suppress nutsedges
16 mo rotational restriction
Cannot be used on cotton in CA
West of Mississippi River, use rates on peanuts is about half of rate allowed east of river
25. Oxadiazon - Ronstar
26. Ronstar Turf and ornamental herbicide
Controls both annual grasses and broadleaf weeds
27. Fluridone - Sonar
28. Fluridone no family Aquatic weed control both submersed and emersed plants in ponds, lakes and drainage canals
Be careful how pond water is used
Another white plants herbicide
Safe on cotton, but way too expensive to use on cotton
