THIS IS A TIMED TEST • Bring a watch • 12-15 minutes per passage • Skip around-do what looks easy first • Pick a last passage • If it looks hardest save it, that way if you run out of time it is not on an easy passage. • Skip questions too, this may help you find the most of the easiest type.
Skipping a passage • Many students do not get time to complete the last passage usually 3.5 • Think about skipping it all together and focusing more time on the others more like 20 mins per passage. • You can still get a 5 without doing a whole passage. • Guessing can’t hurt.
Questions • Remember process of elimination- then guess • Half Bad=All Bad, Most correct answer • If you spend time on a question you better leave an answer. If not it is wasted.
Types of Questions • General Comprehension-bigger idea about the passage • Detail Questions-tell you where to look and for what • Factual Knowledge-uses specific terms, grammar or language
2 approaches • Follow the order given by AP Exam • If you don’t get the main idea do the detail questions first, they are easier and will help shape your understanding
Consistency of Answers • Rule 1-main idea of the passage should be your guiding rule. If confused pick the answer that goes with the main idea. • Rule 2- Pick answers that agree with each other.
The 7 minute passage • To be used when time is running out and you have a whole passage left. • Skip reading and go to questions! • Look at title and author
7 Minute passage • 1-look for questions that take no reading and answer them. • The phrase “cold fire” in line 24 is an example of which of the following literary devices…
7 minute passage • 2- look for questions that require some reading and answer them. • In the context of lines 40-42 “slipping, lazily away” refers to which memory of the speaker?
7 minute passage • Once you answer all you can from step 1 and 2 use the rest of the time to guess and complete as many as you can.
You try it! • 1.Skip passage- read title and author • 2. Answer questions that need no reading • 3. Answer questions that need some reading • 4. Answer any of the rest as time permits.
