What is it? • Reproductive tract scoring, or RTS, is a technique in which someone can check to see when the heifer will be perfect for breeding. In short, It is a scoring of reproductive tract on the scale of 1 to 5. It is used to determine the right time to breed the heifer.
Why is it important • It is recommend by users to only breed the heifer if she is a 3 or higher, that way there is over a 60% chance of becoming pregnant. Its use to use is to help find which heifer is ready to breed and to synchronize birthing. You up your percentage by 15%-20%
So what are we looking for? • • Heifers with small, toneless uterine horns and small ovaries rate an RTS of 1. • • Heifers with an RTS 2 are considered to be closer to cycling than those with a 1 rank. • • RTS 3 heifers are gauged to beon the verge of cycling based on slight uterine tone, in addition to the presence of follicles. • • An RTS 4 value presumes cycling, which is indicated by good uterine tone and size, as well as follicular growth. • • An RTS 5 heifer has all the characteristics of a 4, plus a palpable corpus luteum, the hormone-secreting structure that develops in an ovary after an ovum to cycling than those with a 1 rank.
When should we use it? • To do this procedure, it should be preformed about 3 weeks before breeding season. But it can also be used if a heifer does not take the first time, as a fall back method.
How can we do it? • There are several specialists that you can hirer • Also, some veterinarian clinics have the availability to check.
Cost • A veterinarian can assess several hundred heifers in a day, with cost being anywhere from $3-$5 a head
