THE HISTORY OF SOSNOWIEC The mysterious chapel in Sosnowiec-Zagórze
Sosnowiec has had town privileges since 1902, but the first mentions come from the XII century.
Patelnia („the frying pan”) is the public square in Sosnowiec. With a lot of shops and restaurants, Patelnia became the center of the city.
The Sielecki Castle is the oldest monument in Sosnowiec. His history dates back to the Middle Ages. The castle was burnt in 1824 and rebuilt in 1832.
Nowadays, in the castle Sosnowiec’s Center of Art is located.
Shön Palace was bulit in 1885 by the Shön family, one of the richest and most influential families in nineteenth century Sosnowiec.
Now inside the palace, we can visit museum with regular lectures about history and art.
The station is from the 1859, so it is older than Sosnowiec.
Nowadays, it is one of the most representative bulidings in the city.
Dietel Palace from the XX century was a residence of the influential Dietel family.
The Cathedrial in Sosnowiec was build in 1899. It is the most important catholic temple in Sosnowiec. The painting by fameous Polish artist Włodzimierz Tetmajer.
The sanctuary is 125 years old. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in our city.
Our theatre is 116 years old. The plays of Zagłębie Theatre have a lot of success, especially „Korzeniec”- the play about Sosnowiec, based on the book by the same title.
The blue line symbolize location of the city between two rivers: Black Przemsza and White Przemsza The geologic intersection symbolize Mining in Zagłębie and the red wall is a symbole of steel mill.
Władysław Szpilman was the Polish composer and pianist. He was born in 1911 in Sosnowiec. He is known from his songs- „W małym kinie” („In the little cinema”), Elegia jesienna („Autumnal elegy”), compositions- „The Life of the Machines”, „Ballet Scene” and from thefilm „Pianist” by Roman Polański.
Jan Kiepura was born in 1902 in Sosnowiec. He was very talented Polish singer (tenor) and actor. With his wife- Mártha Eggerth
