  1. How to Study Chemistry - Plan for Success • Do you work? • How many hours are you taking? • Do you have family obligations? • Chemistry requires a lot of time (about 13 hours a week in addition to lecture and lab). You must give yourself ample time to study and assimilate the concepts.

  2. How to Study Chemistry - Homework Problems and Reading • Start the homework on the first day of the Unit. Yes, before it has been presented or discussed in class! • Do the homework in order. • When you get stuck, start reading the text from the first of the chapter until you cover the material addressed in the problem. • Go back to work on more problems until you get stuck again, at which time you begin reading where you left off the first time. • Still stuck? Consult me or your classmates.

  3. Study is not… • sitting around with your friends with your chem text somewhere nearby. • reading the text and making no attempt to work the problems. • viewing one you-tube after another because they explain it better.

  4. Study is… • working the problems over and over until you get it. This may be a quick process, or it may take ages. • thinking about what I think is important (meaning, what I will put on the test). The objectives in your syllabus are helpful here. • (for most people at some point in the course) feeling really stupid. If you keep after it, this feeling will pass.

  5. How to Study Chemistry – Mastering Chemistry • These are the online quizzes. • Start each quiz as soon as it becomes available. • You MAY ask me for help and answers. • Although the quiz is due right before the test, plan to finish the quiz at least a day before the exam. The quiz is worth 15 pts. The exam is worth 100 pts. • Please do not ignore MC. It is 10% of your course grade.

  6. How to Study Chemistry - Lectures and Review for Tests • Attend all lectures. In class, you have the chance to hear the ideas discussed and to work sample problems with immediate help available. • Plan to spend 13 hours a week studying chemistry. • Begin studying for the test a week ahead: check through the Unit objectives in your syllabus and do the homework problems a second time.

  7. Class Environment • No use of cell phones in class • If a call or text is important, take it outside the classroom. • No use of laptops in class • Unless you can prove to me you are taking chem notes with it. • Respect the other students and don’t engage in distracting behavior. • If you come in late or have to leave early, please do so quietly.
