What is NAOSH Week? • NAOSH Weekoccurs every year during the first full week of May and is intended to raise awareness about occupational safety, health and the environment. • The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) joined with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) in 2002 to raise the public's awareness of occupational safety, health and the environment in North America during NAOSH Week. • This is just one tool the almost 100-year-old ASSE and its 32,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members use throughout the year to promote occupational safety aimed at preventing injuries and illnesses.

  3. Several organizations representing thousands of businesses have partnered with ASSE and CSSE to support NAOSH Week, including U.S. federal agencies such as the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to reach millions of people around the globe on the importance of being safe at work. • During NAOSH Week, ASSE and CSSE members, OSHA and NAOSH partners develop and implement activities throughout North America to promote NAOSH Week. • In past years, NAOSH themes have included: mining safety; transportation safety, as transportation accidents are the number one cause of on-the-job deaths; youth workplace safety; and more.

Also in the past few years the United States Congress has passed a resolution supporting NAOSH Week, Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day, ASSE and occupational safety, health and environmental practitioners who work to prevent accidents, injuries and occupational diseases, create safer work and leisure environments and develop safer products. They are committed to protecting people, property and the environment globally and work to make sure that the millions of people who go to work each day return home safely.

  5. Kids’ Poster Contest • ASSE Kids’ “Safety-on-the-Job” Poster Contest is accepting entries from September 19, 2008 until February 14, 2009.

  8. Safety is Good Business • During NAOSH Week 2008 and throughout the year ASSE, CSSE, OSHA and its partners illustrated how safety is good business. • Safety and health not only add value to a business, but to the workplace, employees, the community and to everyone's quality of life.

  9. For instance: • Effective management and implementation of workplace safety and health programs add significant value to individuals and companies by reducing the extent, severity and consequences of work-related injury and illness. • Workplaces that establish safety and health management systems reduce their injury and illness costs by 20 to 40 percent.

  10. Businesses spend $171 billion a year on costs associated with occupational injuries and illness, expenditures that come straight out of company profits and can comprise as much as 5 percent of a company's total costs. • Preventing injuries and illnesses decreases workers compensation and retraining costs, absenteeism and faulty product.

  11. Preventing injuries and illnesses increases productivity, morale and ultimately, profits. Most importantly, workplace safety and health management systems save lives.

NAOSH 2009: What to expect • NAOSH kick-off events will take place in Washington, D.C. on Monday, May 6, 2009 • We are expecting poster entries for the “Safety-on-the-Job” Poster Contest in from all over the US and abroad, including Australia • The theme is “Safety Means Always Coming Home” – inspired by past poster contest participants who noted that safety at work to them means that their family members are coming home at the end of the day

Throughout NAOSH Week, thousands of ASSE members, their families, businesses, government organizations reach out to people worldwide on the importance of job safety and provide information on workplace safety risks and solutions.
