  2. How to be professional writing How to be professional writer • There are more than four way to be able to write in professional way. • Denominalizing You can make sentences shorter, snappier, and more direct by turning some nouns into verbs. The nouns you want to change into verbs have been called "smothered" nouns and "controverted" nouns; some writers call them "nominalizations." If we use this last term, then the act of liberating the noun in question is "denominalizing"; < Lat. de, from + nomen, name). Think of it as "un-nouning" a noun by converting it to its verbal form.

  3. Trimming Fat • By "fat" I mean all those inflated phrases and unnecessary words that clog professional writing. I'm not talking about jargon, precisely, because jargon is sometimes good, as we'll discuss in the next lesson. But what I'm calling "fat" is always bad. • Fatty phrases and words fall into three primary categories: • Unnecessarily long or fancy words (Fatty Words) • Unnecessary prepositional phrases (Fatty Phrases) • Unnecessary repetitions (Pure Fat)

  4. Reducing Jargon Never fear to use little words. Big, long words name little things. All big things have little names, such as life and death, war and peace, dawn, day, night, hope, love, and home. Learn to use little words in a big way. -Anonymous In the previous unit, Trimming Fat, you learned to make "fatty" words and phrases into lean ones. Economy of expression is always appreciated in business, industry, and government--so long as it does not reduce accuracy.

  5. Using Parallel Form One of the hallmarks of effective professional communication is order. In the world of business, industry, and government, we want things to stack up neatly, to line up, to be accessible and easily searchable. We like patterns that help orient our brains to presentations of information. That's why, for example, when someone is giving an oral presentation, we really appreciate it when she starts by orienting us to the purpose and structure of her presentation, perhaps by providing and briefly reviewing an outline (in the form of a handout, or maybe on the overhead or data projector).
