  2. You should be here if: • You have an assessment report stating that you are dyslexic • You need to be assessed for dyslexia • You think you might be dyslexic • Ditto for dyspraxia and dyscalculia

  3. This session will cover: • The role of the Study Support Adviser • What to do if you think you are dyslexic • What the procedure is if you know you are dyslexic • What support you may be entitled to

  4. Study Support Adviser Role • Screening • Arranging dyslexia assessments • Helping with funding applications and ordering equipment • Writing the Summary of Reasonable Adjustments and liaising with faculties • Helping organise special exam arrangements • Providing one-to-one support to funded students

  5. What is dyslexia? “a combination of abilities and difficulties which affect the learning process in one or more of reading, spelling and writing. Accompanying weaknesses may be identified in areas of speed of processing, short-term memory, sequencing, auditory and/or visual perception, spoken language and motor skills” Peer (2002)

  6. The screening process An appointment with the Study Support Adviser will involve: • Questions about your particular learning challenges to see if there is a pattern that might indicate dyslexia or another SpLD • May include Visual Stress Test or coloured overlay test • If a SpLD seems likely, the adviser will talk to you about the options for Assessment • If not, the adviser will direct you to other resources

  7. Acceptable Evidence For exam arrangements and other reasonable adjustments within ARU, as well as for application for funding, you will need: • Post 16 dyslexia assessment report by an Educational Psychologist • A full report, including a full cognitive assessment • Exam arrangements must be specifically outlined in the report • If this isn’t clear, your request must be taken to an exam panel

  8. Reasonable Adjustments • Exam arrangements: commonly extra time; occasionally use of PC, reader, scribe • Extended library loans • Use of digital recorder in lectures • Awareness and understanding of tutors Summary of Reasonable Adjustments is circulated to relevant staff with your approval

  9. Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) - Eligibility In order to receive specialist support and assistive technology in HE, you will need to apply for funding, most likely a DSA. To be eligible for a DSA: • British residency • Course full time or at least 50% part time

  13. Making the most of your funded support • Meet with your Study Support Adviser to plan how you want to use your funded hours • Make an early appointment to plan your first assignment with some guidance • Book training on software with the supplier • Practise using the software
