  1. “At Thy Word I Will” Luke 5:1-10

  2. Luke 5:1-5 1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

  3. Luke 5:6-10 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

  4. Some Observations • Peter and company fished all night without success • Vs. 5 • Peter was a fisherman by trade • So were others – vs. 10 • Wouldn’t Simon know more about fishing? • He was a professional fisherman • “…Nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net...” • This showed great faith on Peter’s part • He realized his stature compared to Jesus at this point • Confessed he was a sinful man – vs. 8

  5. The Principle • When one obeys God: • Acts by faith • Romans 10:7; Hebrews 11:7 • Blessings follow • Proverbs 28:20; Ephesians 1:3 • Unexpected results can follow • Peter probably did not expect such a catch • They were astonished at the catch – vs. 9-10 • The Lord abundantly supplies • James 1:17

  6. The Lesson • We must do what the Lord says, the way He said to do it • Must not doubt • Acts 10:20; 1 Timothy 2:8 • Must not question God • Proverbs 14:12; 16:25 • Trust God, He knows what is best for man • Isaiah 55:8-9

  7. Applications from God’s Word • Examples from scripture are for a reason • Rom. 15:4 – “for our learning” • 1 Cor. 10:1-13 • Two kind of examples: • Good • Bad • Can learn from both

  8. Examples from God’s Word • Noah – Gen. 6:1-22; 7:5, 11-24 • Obeyed God • Made the ark according to God’s instructions • Did not alter – followed the Divine pattern • Noah and his family were blessed.

  9. Examples from God’s Word • King Saul – 1 Samuel 15:1-35 • Did some but not all of what God commanded • Did not follow the Lord’s pattern • Appeased the people • God was displeased • Lost the kingdom

  10. Examples from God’s Word • Naaman – 2 Kings 5:1-15 • Naaman had his own idea at first! • Thought any river would should work! • “behold I thought” - vs. 11 • Proverbs 14:12; 16:25 • Naaman heeled ONLY after obeying God’s instruction! *

  11. Examples from God’s Word • Abraham – Genesis 22:1-19 • Commanded to offer Isaac • Abraham obeyed God’s every instruction • God said, “now I know that you fear God” – vs. 12 • God pronounced a blessing to Abraham – vs. 15-18

  12. Lessons From God’s Word • We must obey God • Even if we think we have a “better” idea! • Proverbs 14:12; 16:25; Isaiah 55:8-9 • We must obey God’s on His terms • Blessings will come when we do… • If and only if we do God’s commands His way

  13. Conclusion • Commit to do the Lord’s will • Jesus did • John 4:34; 6:38 • “Thy will be done” - Matthew 26:42 • Peter did • “And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net” - Luke 5:5

  14. Matthew 7:21-23 - 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
