Ch. 18 Main Ideas • Sec. 1- Collapsed economy of the South after the Civil War lead to subsistence farming and share cropping. This resulted in most farmers being caught in a “Cycle of Poverty”. The ex-slaves were particularly affected, as well as poor whites. • Cycle of poverty

Ch. 18 NotesSec. 1 Dates: 1865- 1895 Title- Postwar changes to Texas Farming • Economic conditions -Land in Texas not destroyed by Civil War ; but most Texans money was tied up in Confederate bonds. Which became worthless. This also hurt businesses which never got re-paided. B. Return of the Small Farm - Many families turned to growing own food because of economic conditions. - Because of lack of inexpensive transportation commercial farming wasn’t pursued.

Reason for this being many people lost land due to financial problems. - Most got their land from large plantations lasted for decades. * Couldn’t earn enough money to actually buy land: despite thistenant farming increased from 1880 to 1900.

Ruled farming in late 1800’s • Because of railroad • No crop made more money • Had to now pay for items normally made for themselves (because of time) • This lead to a manufacturing boom in Texas • Cities grew b/c of cotton • Cotton towns Thrive 1.
