  1. AESOP 2007: Kuroshio Extension Fronts (2 - 24 May 2007) • Rescue eastward-drifting NOAA KEO mooring. • First effort in weak front associated with 3rd meander- interlude while returning west from KEO rescue. • Second effort in ‘the sock’, steep meander predicted to detach (NLOM). Contrast response to downwind (frontogenic) forcing on west side with upwind (frontolytic?) forcing on east side. Sock caps during survey period- front weak on both western and eastern sides. • Third survey in relatively linear, sharp, E-W oriented section of Kuroshio front. Intense cyclonic relative vorticity (3f) in strong gradient region. Optical signals indicative of recent subduction. Majority of cruise spent focusing on this interesting feature.

  2. Front 1: Kuroshio Third Meander (6-10 May 2007)

  3. Front 2: ‘The Sock’, Kuroshio Second Meander (13-16 May 2007)

  4. Front 3: Kuroshio First Meander Crest (17-22 May 2007)
