Session Overview • PART A. Basic Rules/Skills (30 mins) • PART B. Practical Drills and Modified Games Session (45 mins)
Basic Overview • 2 teams of 11 players • 2 batters at one time • 1 team bats, other team bowls/fields then switch over (innings – get 10 batters out) • Batters try to score runs, fielders/bowlers try to get them out. • Team with the most runs at the end of both teams “innings” is the winner.
Equipment BALL BAT WICKET (3 stumps, 2 bails)
Playing Field • Oval Field • Rectangular Pitch in the middle (22 yards from end to end)
Batting • 2 Batters • Try to hit a ball to score runs and defend their wicket. • Can hit the ball in any direction and can run when he/she chooses to.
How Players Score Runs? • Hitting the ball and running from one side of the pitch to the other (1 run) • You can run more than once. • Ball reaches the boundary on the ground – 4 runs • Ball goes over the boundary on the full – 6 runs • Individual runs for batsman go to his total and the team total.
Bowling • Objective: try to get the batsman out • Only over arm (windmill type action) • Arm must be kept straight – cannot throw/pitch the ball. • Bowls 6 balls to the batsman (then switches with another bowler) = over • Different types: • Fast Bowling (over 140 km/hr) • Medium Pace • Spin (off-spin & leg-spin)
How to get Batters out?10 ways…. Most Common: • Bowled • Caught • LBW (Leg Before Wicket) • Run Out • Stumped (by wicketkeeper) Other ways: • Hit Wicket • Hit the Ball twice • Obstructing the Field • Handling the Ball • Timed Out
Wicket-Keeping • Wicket-Keeper stands behind the wicket where the batsman faces. • Tries to catch each ball that is missed by the batsman. • Can also get the batter out by catching the ball off his bat. • Can get the batter out by stumping him • Only fielder allowed to wear gloves.
Fielding • Team that is not batting takes to the field (all 11 players) • Apart from the bowler and wicket-keeper the other 9 players take to the field in different positions tactically employed by their captain.
Cricket Game - Formats • Limited Overs: • One Day Match – each team bats and bowls for 50 Overs. Team with most runs wins. • 20/20 Match – similar to above with slight variations, but bat and bowl for 20 Overs. (Most exciting version) • Test Matches: • Can last up to 5 days • Each team has 2 innings to bat and bowl. • Team with most runs over the 2 innings wins. Must bowl a team out twice to win a test match.
