  5. Safety Committees Why worry about safety? Losses cost millions of dollars! For example, last year: • Employee injuries: $1.9M! • Liability/Property losses: $1.9M! Total: $3.8Million!

  7. Safety Committees What is a Safety Committee? • Procedural Directive School Safety requires schools to have safety committees • Safety Committee focuses on reducing losses • Can also be existing committee

  8. Safety Committees What does a Safety Committee do? Helps the administrator by: Assisting in identifying hazards Meeting regularly to review accidents and losses

  9. Safety Committees What does a Safety Committee do? Making recommendations to correct hazards and prevent future losses Facilitating an effective safety culture

  10. Safety Committees Identifying Hazards: • Periodic inspections • Look for hazards and unsafe conditions • What might cause an accident? • What might be a security risk?

  11. Safety Committees Review Loss Data: • What has caused an accident/loss? • How could it have been prevented? • Identify trends and patterns

  12. Safety Committees Recommendations: • Correcting hazards • Changing work practices • Recommending rules • Suggestions for training

  13. Safety Committees Safety Culture: An environment where everyone… • Takes responsibility for personal safety and safety of others! • Follows all safety rules! • Makes suggestions to improve safety! • Promptly reports accidents, losses and unsafe conditions!

  15. Safety Committees Reporting accidents and losses: Employee injuries: • State law requires notice to principal/manager within 15 days • Notice of Accident must be completed and submitted to supervisor

Safety Committees Reporting accidents and losses: Student injuries: Accident form to be completed following: • Medication error - Copy also goes to Nursing Services • Emergency call - 911 - life threatening situation • Further medical care recommended • Sustains head injury (e.g., blows to the head, whip lash, injuries around eye socket, or any other questionable injury to the head which in the opinion of the Nurse/Health Assistant warrants documentation) • Faulty equipment or unsafe condition existed
