Revision 101 The Mullet Method of Thoughtful Revision
History: The Mullet • The “Mullet” is a hair style which gained incredible, serious popularity during 1980s. • It features a short or otherwise cropped haircut atop the skull and in the bangs, but a significant flow of length toward the rear of the head. • These days, people tend to only wear mullets jokingly. • But that was not always so. • Here are a few fantastic mullets…
Percentages: The 10-90 Rule • A convenient way to think about mullets is as broken-down percentages… • 10% of your hair lives up front. • 90% of your hair lives at the back.
Young Writers… • Young writers defy the beauty of the mullet by ignoring the beauty of its mathematics: • As they write, they tend to do 90% of their work “upfront,” meaning in their first draft… • …and then leave only about 10% to the important phase of revision. • Silly, dumb , unattractive people…
Mature Writers… • Mature writers embrace the majesty of the mullet by doing… • 10% of their work “upfront” (first draft), and • 90% of their work in revision (at the back) • These are smart, sexy people who recognize that their first versions cannot possibly be their best because they are merely the effect of dumping ideas on paper!
So… • As you live, live by the Mullet Method: • Think of your first draft as only a small portion of the work to be done on a strong piece of writing… • And let the real party happen on the back-end of your work!
