  1. Every year rural farmers work hard in various activities to get an income. Such activities include harvesting of maize. Some of the maize is sold while some is kept for domestic use while the rest is kept then re-planted for the next planting season.

  2. Since farmers experience loss of their produce, they resolve to build local granaries for storage of their harvest. The storage enables them to face seasons of drought but still due to its small size it rarely lasts until the next harvest. Also the local granaries do not have sufficient security thus theft is an issue.

  3. Planting is not the only way to get a source of income but also the rearing of cattle is an alternative. Cattle offer meat, milk and also labor in the farms during ploughing. The milk provided by the cows are sometimes used domestically and sometimes sold to companies for further processing.

  4. Unfortunately due to the poor infrastructure, there is poor road network for goods produced by the rural farmers to reach the markets and goods end up rotting hence no income and resulting to poverty. If the roads are developed then transportation would be faster and effective for rural development.

  5. In conclusion we all need to take part in rural development not only in western Kenya but the whole of Africa. No matter how small the contribution is the impact it shall bring will be much greater and of benefit to many. For those who think they are unable to contribute, well.. A contribution to a blog with your ideas and showing the world through your eyes what they had not yet seen and coming up with ways to deal with those issues is a major start!
