  3. 1967:Start of a phd thesis at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin(Prof. Treder)(on Gravity)

  4. Gdansk . Summer 1967 Warsaw . From Warsaw to Gdanks by kayak

  5. vacation in Sopot kayak on Baltic sea

  14. June 1968: Preparation of a protest action by me and a friendJune 20, 1968:A big transparent, showing thePauliner church and requesting reconstruction, was displayed by an automatic clock at the final concert of the Bach festival in Leipzig, in the presence of the government and of many TV teams. I wasin the concert.

  17. Ulbricht gave a special order to the STASI (security police) to find the originators of the transparent

  18. July 1968: Escape to West-Germany July 10: Arrival at the Campsite at the Golden Sand north of Varna in Bulgaria

  19. July 21: 10 am - Start with the kayak, driven by an outboard engine

  20. departure

  21. July 22, about 6 am:Encounter with a Russianwar ship. They passed us in a distance of about 300 m,but did not see our kayak.

  22. Russian ship about 240 km thunderstorm

  23. border

  24. July 22: 11 pm - arrival at the coast near Igneada (Turkey), close to the border

  25. Turkish soldiers observed our arrival. We were brought to an army camp.Next morning: interrogations byan army officer ( in German)Later transport to Kirklareli(capital of European part of Turkey)

  26. Next day:Interrogations again.Transport to Istanbul.Hotel, where the room was guarded by a soldier.Interrogations in the police headquarter.

  27. Two days later:We escaped from the hotel and went by taxi to the German consulate. The consul helped us and gave us shelter in the consulate.Interrogations with Turkish security officers in the next days.

  28. July 29, 1968:Flight from Istanbul to MunichI went to Prof. Heisenberg at the MPI and obtained a scholarship as a phd. student.

  29. September 1968 – Sept. 1970:phd. Student in MunichSept. 1970: Invitation by SLACMeeting with Gell-Mann in AspenStart of a collaboration with M. Gell-Mann

  30. Sept. 1971: Fellowship at CERNCollaboration with Gell-Mann at CERNSept. 1972: Move to Pasadena(Caltech)March 1976: Return to CERN

  31. 1978: Professor at the University of BernMay 1980:Chair at theUniv. of Munich

  32. 1990, after Berlin wall: Book: Flucht aus Leipzig Invitation by chancellor Kohl to join his government

  33. I declined, but agreed to bea close advisor on the problemsof unification ( 1990 – 1993).I worked on the reform of the academic system in the East(universities, academy of science, e.g. Institute Zeuthen => DESY)

  34. Reconstruction of the Pauliner cathetral in a modified form has started.

  35. The Constants of Nature - a Mystery of Physics

  36. Physics Boundary Conditions Local Laws Fundamental Constants

  37. What are fundamental constants? Cosmic Accidents?Determined by Dynamics?Changing in Time?

  38. cosmic accidents?

  39. Sommerfeld, 1916………Pauli (1958): Nr 137, Zürich.............L. Lederman, 137 Eola RoadFeynman: 137–how little we know Example Finestructure Constant

  40. nucleon mass

  41. Nucleon Mass in limit of vanishing quark masses: Experiment: const. calculable, but large errors at present. Exp: 938.272 MeV First calculation of a mass in physics

  42. 6 Constants for stable matter G QED QCD • Atoms, Nuclei =

  43. 28 Constants in theStandard Model G 24 are masses

  44. Time variation of natural constants? Time Variation of the finestructure constant Observation of fine structure of atomic levels Quasars 5-7 billion years back

  45. Experiment at Keck telescope (Australia, England, USA) Fine structure of Fe, Ni, Mg, Sn, A - Quasars, back to 11 bn years in time (challenged by Reimers, Chile, investigating only one quasar) ( Webb, Wolf, Flambaum...)
