Student assignment REFLECTION Reflection on a positive experience of the nurse-patient relationship The following structure is provided to enable you to identify the different stages within reflection and address the relevant issues in this module assessment. Describe what happened In this section you should clearly outline the context of your experience and provide an overview of the patient’s condition and the reason for them receiving nursing care. This section should also provide details of the encounter and the reasons why you consider it to be a positive example of the nurse-patient relationship Explore thoughts and feelings In this section you should provide an account of what you felt was going on between the nurse and patient and clearly support this with the relevant literature. Again, you should explicitly state what the positive aspects of the interaction were within the context of the patient’s care needs.
Student assignment continued What was happening? Here you need to explore what was being achieved within this positive encounter • The outcomes of this relationship for patient care • Why it is important in relation to the patient/carer experience of health care • What contribution nurses and nursing care makes to this experience This discussion should be supported with the relevant literature Conclusion In this section you should discuss how this experience will inform your personal and professional development. This might also include: • Actions that you might take to ensure your development and/or • How you might address the same issues in future placements • Again, use of the relevant literature to support your discussion is essential
“Human caring and human relationships are closely interrelated. Human caring remains an essential dimension of professional work, especially in dealing with life crises, health maintenance problems and changes in health practices. The socialization process of preparing competent, sensitive and humanistic professional nurses as care-providers is a major challenge for the nursing profession.” Madeleine Leininger (1979) Foreword to – Nursing: The Philosophy & Science of Caring. Keep caring at the heart of nursing; whatever the future brings
