  10. Japanese history A 150 years ago Japan was and agricultural nation that had isolated itself from all other cultures. In first contact with the west Japan was a flourishing nation with a highly developed civilization. In 1543 the first Portuguese ships arrived in Japan these ships brought Catholicism to Japan. At first they welcomed the European countries but then got worried that they would be over throw so the government decided to close Japans doors to the West isolating them selves. This lasted 200 years but when the US wanted to open a trading route with japan. They brought steam powered ships so Japan had to agree with there terms. In even later years other western counties forced Japan to trade with them. In 1868 a new government sought to modernize and industrialize japan so they didn’t have to be at mercy of other nations. Lack of rescores was a huge obstacle for Japan achieving industrial power. The major resources needed were iron and petroleum which needed to be imported. Japan later decided to conquer weaker countries to gain resources.

  11. In later years Japan won wars with China and Russia gaining new territory and trading rights. During world war I Japan joined the allies and after the war it was rewarded with control of Germany’s former colonies in the Pacific Ocean. During 1929 there was an economic depression which caused military leaders in japan to expand their territories to help the economy. During world war II Japan sided with the Nazis. On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked pearl harbor and this developed into a full scale war. The two countries suffered greatly but in the end the US dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan quickly surrendered and was occupied by the US for 7 years which was the first time Japan was ruled by an outside nation. Later Japan became one of the biggest trade centers in the world
