Pre-Orientation December 2014 Orientation and Leadership Development Program Introduction – 1 week – mid January Feedback and self-assessment: Completes self-assessment report on strengths and development needs Asks colleagues and friends to fill out feedback reports Undertakes personality profile Introductions to: Leadership Development Program MBA program and options Social elements of MBA and other program participants Business Connect Program Local cultural activities with other program participants Engineer with a multinational energy firm 26 years old from Australia Spent 3 years with current employer Looking to move from an operational to a managerial role Identified as a ‘rising star’ in the organization Some capabilities need development (commercial acumen, presentation skills) but is not aware of that Volunteers at a children’s hospital Gets 360° feedback: Surprised by some elements of feedback Sees disconnect between self-assessment and feedback Realises commercial and presentation development goals Individual development plan: Meets with study coordinator to develop study plan with development goals in mind Chooses Resource Focus, with three resource-based options and resource based business advisory project. Through Business Connect, matched with a Senior Executive and Senior Manager mentor from a WA based global resource company. Session One January – March (7 weeks) Theory: Takes three core units: Organisational Behavior Accounting Data Analysis & Decision Making MBA Resource Focus – Your journey • March – May • (8 weeks) • Session Two • Theory: Takes two core units: • Marketing Principles • Managerial Finance Takes one option: • Global Energy & Mineral Markets • Practice: • Attends workshops and guest lectures by visiting industry faculty • Attend workshops with Librarians and Study Skills team • As part of the Leadership Development Program learns more about “Leading Self” eg. Self management; adaptivity; proactivity • Careers: • Through Business Connect - meets senior executive • Meets student peers from leading global resource companies • Practice: • Through ‘Leading Organisations’ program • Attends workshops and guest lectures by visiting industry faculty • Attends Case Club & Boardroom Lunches • Careers: Through Business Connect meets Business Executive mentor and discusses career trajectories
Session Three June – July (8 weeks) Theory: Takes two core units: Economic Management & Strategy Operations Management Takes one option: Asset Failures MBA Resource Focus – Your journey • August • (2 weeks) • Study Tour • Practice: Through ‘Leading Organizations' Series, attends workshops and guest lectures by visiting industry faculty • Careers: • Attends career skills workshops with industry speakers • As part of Leadership Development Program, learns more about “Leading Others”, eg transactional management, transformational leadership etc • Theory: No theory work • Practice: Undertakes two week study tour to the Pilbara region of Western Australia – visits BHP Billiton and Woodside mining operations • Careers: Through Business Connect, meets mentor, to discuss ongoing development in MBA and feedback from Leadership Development Program
Session Five September – October (6 weeks) Theory: Takes one core unit: Strategic Management Takes one option: Strategic Management of Resource Companies MBA Resource Focus – Your journey • End October – December • (7 weeks) • Session Four • Careers: • Meets Business Connect Mentor for final review • Practice: • Specifically focuses on presentation skills and receives good feedback from peers and consultant coach • Through ‘Leading Organisations’ series, attends Strategy Month • Careers: Attends career skills workshops with industry speakers • Practice: Undertakes Business Advisory Project in a WA-based global resource company working with a team of three students • Theory: No theory work
