About the IEEE • A not-for-profit society • World’s largest technical membership association with over 400,000 members in 160 countries • Expertise & experience of members = quality of content • Core areas of activity • Membership • Publishing • Conferences • Standards • Education IEEE Mission IEEE promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession
Thomas A. Edison Alexander Graham Bell How it all started… Tremendous growth in electrical technology in late 19th century, EE became a profession Plans began for a milestone international Electrical Exhibition at Franklin Institute in Philadelphia This prompted 25 of America's prominent electrical engineers to form a society to promote their field The American Association of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) founded on 13 May, 1884
G. Marconi The beginnings of the IEEE… Marconi’s broadcast of morse code across the Atlantic in 1901 captivated the world Many young engineers attracted to radio April 14, 1912, one of history’s worst disasters occurred but radio saved 700 lives Radio technology boom resulted in a new society in 1912, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) Overlap and duplication of efforts led to a merger plan AIEE and IRE merged in 1965 to form IEEE
IEEE Humanitarian Activities • In recent years, IEEE allocating more resources than ever to humanitarian efforts • Influence from IEEE Student Groups and GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) • Recent activities include: • Field projects • Information dissemination and networking • Organizing the community Moshe Kam 2011 IEEE President
IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL) • More than 3 million full-text documents • 150+ IEEE journals & magazines • 1100+ annual IEEE conferences • Approximately 3,000 IEEE standards • IET conferences, journals & magazines • Inspec index records for all articles • Backfile to 1988 • Select legacy data back to 1872 • 400+ eBooks • IBM Journal of Research & Development (including IBM Systems Journal) • Over 400 Educational Courses • Five AIP/AVS journals
What is the IET? • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) • The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies – located in the Stevenage, Hertfordshire (UK) • >150,000 members in 127 countries • Mission: To build an open, flexible and global knowledge network supported by individuals, companies and institutions and facilitated by the IET and its members.
Quality of ContentPeer Reviewed Periodicals and Conference Proceedings • What makes IEEE content different? • IEEE peer review - the process in which a journal article or conference paper is submitted by the prospective publisher to experts in the field for critical evaluation prior to publication, a standard procedure in scholarly publishing. Synonymous with referred or juried review. • Key questions • Is the science accurate? • Does the paper make a unique contribution to the “body of knowledge?” • Assures credibility and authority of content • Beyond news or business trade sources • Far beyond open web content • Most frequently cited content in technical literature & in Patents
IEEE = Leader in TechnologyJournal Citation Report Results, by Impact Factor IEEE publishes: • #1journalin Electrical and Electronic Engineering • 16 of the top 20 journals in Electrical and Electronic Engineering • 8 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications • 6 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture • 3 of the top 5 journals in Computer Science, Cybernetics • 3 of the top 5 journals in Automation & Control Systems • # 1 in Artificial Intelligence • # 1 in Transportation Technology • # 3 in Imaging Science • # 3 in Robotics • # 5 in Biomedical Engineering The ISI JCR presents “quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to evaluate the world’s leading journals” (2010 report released June 2011)
