Tangled • Rapunzel is a teenager who goes against her “mother” by disobeying her orders to stay in the castle • Rapunzel cannot handle herself outside the castle and she has to pay a “prince charming” to protect her in the real world • Rapunzel is also not very smart which follows along with the typical “blonde, pretty girl, dumb” stereotype
My Neighbor Totoro • In this film, many times the two girls get themselves into trouble that they can not handle without the help of their dad. • The dad is able to handle everything while the girls seem to be handling nothing at all • The girls in this movie seem to know nothing about the outdoors while the father knows everything
Brave • In this film, Merida, the main character, a teenager, goes against her mother and even turns her into a bear to get her own selfish way • This shows how Disney is portraying teenagers as “rebels.” As in they are going against whatever their parents say
Spirited Away • In this film there are not many stereotypes • They show a strong girl who fights for her parents and helps the small town deal with their problems • The only complaint I have is that the town turns the girls parents into pigs inferring that parents are bad and she is better off without them
Kiki’s Delivery Service • In this film a witch in training goes out into the real world and finds out own hard it is in the real world • There are not many stereotypes in this film because its hows how a hard working girl can make it in the real world with no prier experience • Also, it shows how hard work pays off
WHY? • This matters because Disney and Japanese Anime are building stereotypes for certain cultures that are not wanted by the cultures and Disney and JapaneseAnime should respect that.
