Early life Francis Richard Lubbock was born on October 16, 1815. He was born in Beaufort, S.C. At age fourteen, after his father's death, he quit school and took a job as a clerk in a hardware store. He later pursued a business career in South Carolina and then in New Orleans, and continued his business activities when he moved to Texas in 1836. He was married three times-first to Adele Baron of New Orleans in 1835; then to Mrs. Sarah E. Black Porter, the widow of a Presbyterian minister, in 1883; and then, after his second wife's death, to Lou Scott in 1903. In 1837 Lubbock moved to Houston, Texas, where he opened a general store. During the 1840s he began his ranching operations.
Profession Before the Civil War Before the Civil War started Francis was the ninth governor of Texas and in 1857 he was elected lieutenant governor of Texas. He was a democrat and failed to be reelected in 1859. He also followed the confederate secession. In 1861 Lubbock won the governorship of Texas.
Position in the Civil War When his government term ended he join the Confederate Army and was appointed to be a Lieutenant Colonel. He served under John Marauder and later was promoted to Aide-de-camp for Jefferson Davis.
What Happened After the War After the war he was imprisoned at Fort Delaware before being paroled. On his return to Texas, he continued to pursue business interest in Houston and Galveston from 1878 to 1891, he served as a Texas State Treasure.
When and How He Died Lubbock died on June 22,1905 of natural causes in Austin, Texas. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetary in Austin, Texas.
Fun Facts You may have heard of Lubbock Texas and you might be thinking it was named after him but it was actually named after his brother Thomas Saltus Lubbock.
