Practise exam question - inference What can you learn from source A about the Hiss case? Source A From a telegram sent by Alger Hiss to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1948. He was responding to the accusations made by Whittaker Chambers. I do not know Mr Chambers and , so far as I am aware, have never laid eyes on him. There is no basis for the statements made by Mr Whittaker about me to your House of Un-American Activities Committee. I would further appreciate the opportunity of appearing before your committee to answer these statements.
Practise exam question - inference What can you learn from source A about the Hiss case? • What is the examiner looking for? • Your ability to make inferences from the source. An inference something you can work out about a source, even though the source doesn’t directly state it. (Reading ‘between the lines’.) • In your answer, give 2 or 3 inferences you can make from source A about the Hiss case • Support (back up) each inference you make with a SHORT quote from the source • It’s a good idea to write: ‘Source A suggests that/tells us that………..I know this because it says….(short quote)’. This signposts inferences for the examiner and keeps answers on track. • You should NOT bring in your own knowledge of the Hiss case, and should NOT comment on the source’s purpose, reliability, objectivity etc.
What’s good about this answer? How could it be improved? Source A says “I do not know Mr Chambers and , so far as I am aware, have never laid eyes on him”. He says that he has never met Mr Chambers and has nothing to do with him. Hiss says there is no basis for the statements made by Mr Whittaker Chambers to HUAC. He thinks the accusations are unfair. Source A tells us that Hiss is prepared to testify in front of HUAC. He is clearly confident that he is innocent of any accusations that have been made against him by Chambers and that he can be proven innocent. We know this because in source A Hiss says he would welcome “the opportunity of appearing before your committee”. REVIEW
