Havre de GraceUrban Food Forest Project The plan for creating a long-term self-sustaining food source for the community of Havre de Grace (in a nutshell).
Mission Our mission building the food forest is to bring the community together, teach people a sustainable lifestyle, feed the homeless/hungry, help protect the environment/watershed, and have a more eco-conscious community. Once our objectives are completed here in Havre de Grace we would like to spread the operation to surrounding areas through three methods; 1. Word of mouth, once people see what a food forest can provide they may be inspired to do the same in their town. 2. Bringing this information to people not able to see the forest physically through internet, news articles, short YouTube videos, and any other way of outreach. 3. Cooperating with local schools to educate youth on sustainable food practices, creating more local interest and awareness.
The basic difference between conventional designs and permaculture design is the zoning. Conventional zoning Permaculture zoning One system from the inside out. • Isolated systems front to back.
The idea of permaculture gardening is to create a natural system that takes care of itself. Permaculture zoning usually contains zones 0-5, 0 being the working or living space and 5 being a permanent outside barrier. • Zone 1 is the area needing most attention and frequent visits. • Zone 2 is a less intensely managed area. • Zone 3 areas are less visited areas that still form part of the ecosystem. • Zone 4 is where wild food gathering will take place from self sufficient trees. • Zone 5 is the natural typically unmanaged area.
7 Layers • Layer 1 - The Canopy • Layer 2 - Low tree layer (dwarf fruit/nut trees) • Layer 3 - Shrubs • Layer 4 - Herbaceous • Layer 5 – Root • Layer 6 - Soil Surface (cover crops) • Layer 7 - Vertical Layer (climbers, vines)
7 Layers-Continued The purpose of a 7 layer system is… to replicate a forest ecosystem while working along side with nature to provide the best opportunity for each plant to thrive, once the forest reaches fully operational status it should be able to regulate itself with minimal help from a human.
How do we plan on initiating public favor of this project? The only way for this project to be possible is if there are people willing to work hard so we can accomplish our goals… • The first step has already been taken to muster some public support, a Facebook page was created as a litmus test to see what locals thought. (currently 30 members strong) • The second step will be a public information campaign by handing out fliers, talking to people one the streets, and advertising at local participating businesses. • The last step is designing a website (word press) for the forest so people can see our goals and what this project is all about.
Future Goals… What’s the plan after the forest has been built? • Community gardening workshops, days for the youth to come and explore the gardens, local gatherings, etc. • We are also discussing a film project to document what it took to get the project going and how the forest is built, for an online mini documentary to inspire others to do the same in their community.
Things for the community to decide… Location, location, location What to plant… It will also be the decision of the collective as to what we should grow. This will provide conditions for a wide variety of plants, as we all have different “favorite” plants we like to grow. • We will have to decide as a group where to put our gardens and what layout we should choose. We should also remember we are not limited to one space, if there is enough interest we could have forests popping up all around town.
We have an opportunity… Currently there is only one other established food forest in the America… today we are presented with an opportunity to build something that could last practically forever, this is a way to speak to future generations and show them a future they can believe in. We are also presented with the opportunity to further the “green movement” taking place in America, this is where we can play our role. Not only will we inspire those in our communities, but we can hopefully inspire all of America to follow suit and provide a more sustainable environment for ALL communities across this great nation.
