  3. What is the atmosphere? A blanket of gases surrounding the Earth.

  4. What makes up our atmosphere?

  5. Variable Components in Air • Water Vapor: Water in Gas form • Ozone: (O3 ) Absorbs harmful UV radiation from the sun • Solid Particles: Examples include sea salt, fine soil, smoke, and soot from fires, pollen, ash and dust from volcanic eruptions

  7. Thermosphere Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere Earth Outer Space

Troposphere • Lowest Layer • Temp decreases with height • This is where we live • Weather occurs here • Stratosphere - Second lowest layer - Temp increases with height and airplanes fly in this layer - Ozone (03) layer - Absorbs most of the damaging ultraviolet sunlight (UV-B) • Mesosphere - Third layer from earth’s surface • - Temp decreases - Majority of meteors burn up • Thermosphere - Outer most layer • - Very few molecules, temp increases because oxygen and nitrogen absorb harmful solar radiation. Satellites and Space Shuttle fly in this layer. Layers of the Atmosphere Still would feel cold Ozone Layer
