What is a Catheter? • A hollow tube, usually made of a soft rubber or plastic, that is inserted into the bladder of pts that are unable to urinate. • Urinary Drainage bag • bag attached to the catheter to collect drained urine
Types • French (or straight) • inserted into the bladder to drain urine but is not left in the bladder • usually used to collect a sterile urine specimen • Foley (aka indwelling or retention) • usually used to drain the bladder over an extended period of time • has a small balloon on the end that is inserted into the bladder that is inflated to prevent the tube from sliding out of the body • Condom (external) • eliminate the need for an internal catheter and decrease the chance of urinary infection • is placed on the penis and attached to the urinary-drainage tubing and collection bag

Procedures (Providing Catheter Care) • 1. Assemble equipment • 2. I-WIPE • 3. Elevate bed • 4. Cover pt • 5. Position ptSUPINE position c legs spread and bent • 6. Open catheter kit • 7. Place disposal pad under pt • 8. Put on gloves • 9. Obtain sterile applicator • 10. Female: • Use thumb and forefinger to open labia • Wipe front to back of meatus c app, excessively clean • Dispose of applicator • 11. With a sterile app, clean the catheter from the meatus down 4in, repeat c new sterile app • Observe area for signs of irritation, ab discharge, or crusting
Remove under pad and place in waste basket • Remove gloves, wash hands • Check catheter to make sure it is strapped to the leg • Observeall checkpoints before leaving pt • Place call signal, water, and supplies w/in reaching distance • Lower bed to lowest level • Tube is free of kinks • Tube is positioned to allow for proper flow of urine • Drainage bag is attached to bed frame and below level of bladder • Drainage tubing is above level of drainage bag • Urine is flowing into bag • Place all disposable supplies into waste basket • Wash hands • Report and/or record
Procedures (Emptying a Urinary Drainage Unit) • Obtain proper equip • IWIPE • Place towel under bag • Put cylinder on top of towel • Empty urine back by releasing clamp • Clamp drainage tube and clean with antiseptic or disinfectant swab, then replace tube in the unit • Observe all checkpoints before leaving the room • Recordamt and color of urine • Save specimen if needed if anything unusual occurs • Empty cylinder into toilet and rinse c cold water, and wash with soapy, warm water • Remove gloves and wash hands
