  1. Genetics 7th Grade Science Biology (DNA) Clinton County Middle School

  2. Objectives • Describe the combination of traits in organisms • Identify where hereditary information is contained • Identify parts of DNA molecule and its structure • Explain how DNA copies itself • Describe structure and function of each kind of RNA

  3. Bell Ringer • Pass out Ecology Test • Take 2 minutes to look over test • Go over answers to test • Check for miscalculations • Discuss Class average • Did you or did you not meet goal? What can we do better?

  4. Key Vocabulary • Chromosome • Tight coils of DNA • Eukaryote • A cell that has a membrane-bound nucleus • Prokaryote • A cell whose nucleus is not bound by a membrane • Gene • a specific sequence of DNA nucleotides that carry hereditary traits • Trait • Genetic characteristics of an individual

  5. DNA • Aka-Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) • 99.9% of DNA is the same in all humans • Only 0.1% of your DNA is unique to you! • Scientist knew about DNA since mid-1800’s • In 1952, scientist Rosalind Franklin discovered DNA’s 2 chains • In1953, using work of Franklins, James Watson and Francis Crick made a model of a DNA molecule

  6. Nitrogenous Base Pairs • Adenine (A) • Thymine (T) • Cytosine (C) • Guanine (G) • Adenine---Thymine • Cytosine--Guanine

  7. Quiz Time • Which Nitrogenous pairs, pair up in a double helix of DNA? • In 1952, who was the scientist that discovered that DNA had 2 chains? • Watson and Crick created a model of what?
