Page 99 • Secede – to officially withdraw from the Union (United States) • When Lincoln is elected president in 1860, South Carolina and 6 other states secede • South Caroline, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas • 4 others will leave later • They form the Confederate States of American • The Union (The United States) says secession is illegal (against the Constitution), so the South cannot leave. They will fight if necessary to keep the Union together • All compromises have failed and war is the only answer Secession Copy Notes

Page 103 • First president elected from the Republican Party: against the spread of slavery • First Inaugural Address (1861) – does not want to get rid of slavery. Constitution protects slavery where it is: just stop the spread into new areas. Lincoln’s knows his job is to protect the Union, the Whole Union, by any means necessary • Emancipation Proclamation (1863)- Document that freed the slaves in the rebellious states. Changed the purpose of the war. Britain will now support the Union because they were against slavery. • Gettysburg Address (1863) – Speech made by Lincoln at the dedication of the national cemetery after the battle of Gettysburg. “These dead shall not have died in vain” - we must carry on what they started and gave their life for. “Government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from this earth.” - we must save democracy and freedom for all men. • Second Inaugural Address (1865) – Calls for a time of healing “with malice toward none, with charity toward all.” Lincoln just wants to bring the coutry back together, no punishment on the south just peace. Page 107 Reconstruction is the period of time after the Civil War where the Union has to be restored. The south has to be brought back into the Union The South has to do away with slavery and ratify the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. Lincoln is assassinated 5 days after the war is over • Lincoln wanted a peaceful rebuilding of the union. This plan will die with Lincoln • Andrew Johnson becomes president when Lincoln is assassinated • Radical Republicans take over Congress and want the South to pay for all the “costs” of war as well as be punished for starting it.
