Research Overall, research says that students who behave better, achieve better (Van Horn, 2003) This means that the lower the bullying rates, the more student achievement rates increase
Lesson Learned • Building rapport with Health/Science teachers • Colleague assistance for administrative duties • Being prepared and organized eased anxiety • Make sure classrooms have working projectors • More hands-on activities to foster the building of conflict resolution skills • Do not conduct guidance lessons back-to-back
Implications/Limitations • Students have the attitudes and knowledge about bullying, but more emphasis on skill-building • Not all students learn at the same pace • Bullying rates may not reflect an accurate representation of the school • GPA may take a while to see significant improvements • Guidance lesson only occurred over the course of one day • Presentations should occur at all Health/Science classes to reach all students
Next Steps • More bullying lessons to occur over the course of the year • Systematic bullying prevention/intervention needs to occur at the middle school at 3 levels (individual, classroom, school-levels) • More prevention/intervention needs to occur for males (group, anger management, conflict resolution, peer mediators)
