Grammar: • Participles as Adjectives • An adjective is a word whose main purpose is to modify a noun or pronoun. • She is beautiful. • He is handsome. • That new movie is boring. • The students are excited for vacation. • In this unit we will focus on adjectives of emotion that end with –ed and –ing.
Grammar: Participles as Adjectives • We use adjectives ending in –ed to describe the RECEIVERS of feelings and/or emotions. • In other words: “how we feel” • Examples: • Ifeel frightened because of the film. • The students were entertained by the professor’s lecture. • We use adjectives ending in -ing to describe the CAUSES of feelings and/or emotions. • In other words: “what makes us feel the way we do” • These ‘CAUSES’ are usually things or situations. • Examples: • The film is frightening. • The professor’s lecture was entertaining.
Grammar: Participles as Adjectives The ghost is frightening the woman. The woman is frightened by the ghost.
Grammar: Participles as Adjectives • Some –ed adjectives can be followed by a preposition and a noun or the –ing (gerund) form of a verb. • I’m interestedin his new book. • I’m interestedin readinghis new book.
