OBJECTIVE • Enables medical schools to receive all letters electronically via AMCAS • More than 50% of letters currently arrive on paper • Enables applicants to have their authors send all letters to AMCAS (for participating schools) rather than to each school. • Ensures limited change for pre-health advisors by accepting letters through multiple paths. • This service is included in the AMCAS application fee.
AMCAS Letters Letter Basics • Letters can be received by AMCAS in a variety of ways: • Mail (Iowa) • AMCAS Letter Writer Application (Coming Later) • Interfolio (If You Are a Member) • VirtualEvals (Not Iowa)
AMCAS Letters Letter Basics • Applicants can submit up to 10 letters to AMCAS • Applicants should be aware of the number their specific medical schools desire—most will want far fewer than 10 • AMCAS retains letters for one application cycle only
AMCAS Letters Letter Basics • In AMCAS, the student will: • Identify the letters AMCAS will receive (up to 10 letters) • Identify the medical schools to which each letter should be sent • Print letter request form and provide it to the letter writer • Track receipt of letters by AMCAS
AMCAS Letters Applicants • Committee Letter vs. Letter Packet vs. Individual Letter The University of Iowa does not use a Committee or Letter Packet process; instead, you will request individualletters from your recommenders
AMCAS Letters Applicants • For your individual recommenders (UI process): • Enter in AMCAS as an “Individual Letter” • Enter Individual’s Name • Print the AMCAS letter request form, and provide this form to Individual • This form will facilitate fast matching to the application.
AMCAS Letters Applicants • Designating Letters to Medical Schools • Select Medical School • A pre-populated list of letters entered by the applicant will appear • Choose from the list of letters by either selecting all letters or designating them individually • Letters DO NOT have to be entered before submission of the AMCAS application. • Once application is submitted with letter information it can NOT be edited/deleted
