1. Augusti 2006 Jag behöver skor till mitt skohö. =) Eller rättare sagt, det är dags att börja tänka på hur jag ska fixa mitt behov av vinterskodon. Det givna alternativet är att använda den typ av sko som traditionellt har använts med skohö, samiska vinterskor av renskinn. Sådana skor är inget jag själ kommer att försöka mig på att göra, än. Därför tar jag kontakt med några samiska bekanta och hör mig för. Efter ett tag får jag napp, en kvinna i Kiruna kan sy både sydsamiska och nordsamiska skor. Vi börjar diskutera modeller. August of 2006 I need shoes to my shoe hay. =) Seriously, I need to start thinking about winter footwear. The logical choice seem to be the traditional kind of shoe used together with sho hay. The Sami reindeerhide winter shoes. This is one handicraft I won’t try, at least yet. So I contact a couple of my Sami acquaintances to get at grip. After a while I find a woman in Kiruna who can sew both southern Sami and northern Sami shoes. We start to discuss models. Fas: modell?  This is 3 Southern Sami shoe models And this is a Northern Sami Shoe model  Här är 3 Sydsamiska Lappskor Och det här är en nordsamisk modell Skillnaden mellan sydsamiska och nordsamiska renskinnsskor är att de sydsamiska är sydda med rätsidan utåt och inkantade med vadmalsresmor medan de nordsamiska är vändsydda. Det innebär att de nordsamiska tar kortare tid att sy och ligger lite lägre i pris. The differens between southern Sami and northern Sami reindeer hide shoes is that the southern Sami shoes are sewn with the furside out and with an inlay of woolfabric while the northern Sami modell is sewn inside out and turned afterwards. That makes the northern Sami model faster to make and a bit lower in price. Knytbanden återkommer vi till. De ska egentligen också finnas på modellen ovan och de nordsamiska skorna. We will return to the shoestrings. They should also be used with the modell above and with the northern Sami shoes. Stage: Pattern modification Fas: Mönsterförändring • During a visit at S-Å Risfjäll, a renown Sami craftsman, he told us of a simpler southern Sami shoemodel that is sewn inside out and turned over, like the northern Sami modells, but leaves out the ”hook” on the toe. This allows for the snow to fall of the shoe easily. (The shape is suggested on the photo below). • I contact the seamstress and ask if she could modify the northern Sami modell to something similar to the southern Sami workingshoe modell. • Under ett besök hos S-Å Risfjäll, en känd samisk konsthantverkare, berättar han att det också finns en vändsydd modell av den sydsamiska skon. Den har igen krok framtill och det (tillsammans med pälshårens riktning) gör att snön lätt åker av skon när man arbetar i snö. ( se ritningen på fotot nedan) • Jag kontaktar min bekant, sömmerskan och frågar om hon kan modifiera den nordsamiska vändsydda skon för att likna arbetsskons modell. 4. Stage: Inlay sole Fas: Iläggssula • *I need a inlay sole to the shoes. (and the shoe hay, besides the sole). • *Traditionally the Sami used the head hide of the reindeer. Like the leghides (the bällings) the hair of the head hide is more firmly attached to the hide than the hairs on the remaining reindeer hide. The head hide is called galloe (spelling?) in northern Sami, or Härna. • The hide of the head doesn’t need tanning, only scraping and drying of the hide, and then cutting the soles into a fitting shape. The soles should lay with the fur up towards the feet in the shoes. • During modern times the Sami have also used wool soles or wool innershoes in the Sami skoes. In this project I will try both and evaluate. • Extra currrriculum: Galloe has also bee used for blankets. Lots of headhieds were sewn together and tha back of the blanket was sewn in wool cloth. • * Till skorna ska man använda en iläggssula (och skohö, såklart). • Traditionellt användes renens huvudskinn. Precis som benhudarna (bällingarna) är huvudet särskilt utsatt för kula och håren sitter fast betydligt bättre än på den övriga renhuden. Huvudskinnet kallas galloe (stavning?) på nordsamiska eller härna. Huvudskinnet behöver inte garvas för att göra sulor utan bara skrapas, torkas och klippa till. Sulorna ska ligga i skorna med håren uppåt, mot fotsulan. • Under mer modern tid har också ullsulor eller ullinnerskor använts till de samiska skorna. I det här projektet ska jag prova båda och utvärdera. • Extra vetande: Galloe har också använts till fällar. Mängder av huvudhudar syddes samman och baksidan kläddes med vadmal.
