Perceived as a god, Cortes bullied the Native Americans to get gold 4. When the Indians eventually rebelled, Cortes attacked them and burned Tenochtitlan

  2. Spanish Pattern of Conquest • The Spanish lived among the Aztecs and many married Native American women. • But, they oppressed the natives by forcing them to work in the encomienda system.

  3. 2.A. Exploring Florida • After Ponce de Leon discovered Florida, Spain spent five decades there. • France arrived after Spain became discouraged, but then their pirates began to target Spanish ships, Spain returned to drive the French away.

  4. 2. B. Settling the Southwest • In 1540, Coronado led an expedition into Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. • Spanish priests gathered the natives at Santa Fe, New Mexico. • They established the el Camino Real, a 1500 mile trail to carry goods from Santa Fe to Mexico City.

  5. 3. A. Conflict in New Mexico • There was much tension between the priests and the Native Americans. • They forced the Indians to pay tribute, abused them physically and forced them to do work.

Pope’s Rebellion • The priests punished the Native American, Pope, for his worship practices, which they thought to be witchcraft. • In 1680, he led a well-organized rebellion during which 17,000 fighters destroyed churches, executed priests and drove the Spaniards back to New Spain. • Spain would never again have complete control of the Americas.
