Biographical Info • Born in Valley City, ND, 1929 • Built his own darkroom • Minneapolis College of Art and Design 1952 • Scholarship to study in Florence- Renzo Maggini • Fell in love with photography • Worked for advertising company in Minnesota • Returned to photography in 1994 when company was sold

  4. More about his art • Received very little formal training • Shoots mostly close ups • Did a lot of Platinum Printing – lots of grays • Brought back gum dichromate printing- color prints • Very difficult method of printing • Produces brilliant colors

  6. Fireworks Cy Decosse • Similarities • Lines • Exploding out • Black/White • Simplicity • Differences: • Mine has higher Contrast • His petals have greater Thickness • Mine is a Squished dried out Paintbrush vs his is a natural flower

Bromeliad • Differences: • His :Black & White vs mine is in Color • His Petals are Dark/\ Mine are White • His has less Shadows vs mine the shadows become an active element. • His is Zoomed in vs mine is not cropped • His is Centered vs mine is off to the left side. • Mine is a Radish cut up and soaked in Ice water overnight creating this Flower Cy Decosse • Similarities: • Both Opening Up from the center • Both have Perspective (Zoomed Out) • Both have Curved lines petals • Both have a Spikey Core

Blue Lotus of the Nile • Differences: • No water (waves) • Mine does not have reflection vertically mine has it horizontally fanned lines on top/box • Mine is primarily Red vs His is Blue • Electrical Ammeter vs a floating flower • Similarities: • Horizontal Horizon line separating reality from reflection • Both represent Balance • Both are Color photos • Both have fanned lines in bottom half from a central point

  9. Yin Yang Lilies Similarities: Balance -Cone Shape -Perspective Overhead view Differences: Mine are Ice cream cones his are flowers Shadows in my background vs. -Plain Colored background -White vs. Tan Cone shapes -Curved vs. Straight edges -Symmetric

Four Flag Poles • Background is: Ocean vs. Sky • Perspective (Depth) • Glimmer on ocean • Contrast • Shades of blue • Number of lines • I looked up at overhead wires attached to a high tension pole • Waves in vertical lines are created naturally mine I created by manipulating the straight lines with Photoshop • Get weaker near bottom • Repetition • Balance
