Do Now • Which list of elements consists of a metal, a metalloid, and a nonmetal? • Li, Na, Rb • Cr, Mo, W • Sn, Si, C • O, S, Te • The elements in Group 2 are classified as • Metals • Metalloids • Nonmetals • noble gases
Atomic Bonding Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design Mr. Quinn and Ms. Tom 11/6/13
Aim • How are compounds and elements different?
What are some chemicals you have used? • You can’t find most of these on the periodic table! • They are compounds
Compound vs. Element • An element is a pure form of an atom (and nothing else) • A compound is a pure substance made of 2 or more elements
Properties • Elements and compounds have different physical properties • Melting point, boiling point, etc. • Elements and compounds have different chemical properties • Reactivity, solubility, etc.
Types of Compounds • Salt: a metal and a nonmetal combined • Molecule: two or more nonmetals combined
Compounds in Architecture • The Statue of Liberty is made of copper • Over time, various compounds have built up, turning it green • These compounds also protect it!
Compounds in Architecture • Iron and oxygen combine to form iron oxide • More commonly known as rust!
Why do you think compounds have different properties from elements?
How can we recognize compounds vs. elements? • For elements we write the atomic symbol • Al, Fe, C, F, Ne • For compounds, the symbol and number of all elements are written • Water is… • H2O • Sugar is… • C6H12O6 • Salt is… • NaCl
Practice, Round 1 • Which of the following is a compound? • Na • C • H2O • Xe
Practice, Round 2 • Organize the following compounds into “salt” or “molecule” • H2O • NaCl • CaO • CH4 • H2SO4 • KBr
