10.7 Midpoint of a Line Segment CORD Math Mrs. Spitz Spring 2007
Objective • Find the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment in the coordinate plane given the coordinates of the endpoints.
Assignment • pp. 429-430 #3-40 all
Midpoint • Definition of midpoint is the point on the segment that separates it into two segments of equal length. -5 3
Midpoint • The coordinates of the midpoint, J, of line segment IK shown on the number line can be found as follows: 3 -5 The coordinate of the midpoint is -1.
Midpoint on a Number Line • The coordinate of the midpoint, P, of two points x1 and x2 on a number line is:
Midpoint of a Line Segment • The coordinates of the midpoint (x, y) of a line segment whose endpoints are at (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are:
Ex. 1: The endpoints of a diameter of a circle are (-1, 2) and (3, -3). Find the coordinates of the center of the circle. • The diameter of a circle is a line segment. The center of a circle is the midpoint of the diameter.
Ex. 2: The endpoints of a line segment are (2, 8) and (-1, 4). Find the coordinates of the other endpoint. The coordinates of the other endpoint are (-4, 0).
