  2. Literary Devices • Foreshadowing: • ‘“We’re living in a tent. This is not a life”’ (Jewison 24). • Said by Jennifer. Who is upset with the living conditions right now. • Cliché: • ‘“The simple life”’ (Jewison 25). • Said by Roy. Roy has a simple life.

  3. Main Literary Device • Symbolism: • ‘“Unless I catch you wearing a red flannel shirt … I’ll leave you on the spot”’ (Jewison 24). • “Norman’s shoulder, which was clad in a red plaid flannel shirt” (Jewison 31). • Shows confidence, freedom and independence. • “He slept soundly for the first time in months” (Jewison 31). • His self conflict is resolved.

Characters & Conflicts • Person vs. Person ~ Norman vs. Jennifer • Not happy with the relationship she is in with Norman. • Person vs. Self ~ Norman vs. Himself • Lacking self confidence. • He is not happy with his life. • Person vs. Person ~ Jennifer vs. Roy • Roy is changing Jennifer’s husband, to the opposite of what she wants.

  5. Resolutions to Conflicts • Norman vs. Jennifer • In a sense there is a resolution, because she ends up leaving. • Norman vs. Himself • Begins sleeping again. • Found his true calling, of dumpster diving. • Jennifer vs. Roy • She ends up leaving.

  6. Theme • Following your heart and dreams. • “Jennifer half- heartedly agreed to let Norman pursue his dream of opening an Interpretive Centre” (Jewison 25). • Making something out of nothing. • Making the most of a bad situation.
