Ho Chi Minh vs. Imperialism • 1941: Ho Chi Minh forms the Vietminh to fight Japan, who invaded French Indochina • After being rejected by West, Ho Chi Minh forms Indochina Communist Party • 1945: After Japan’s defeat in WWII, Ho Chi Minh declares an independent Vietnam • France won’t accept an independent Vietnam – DeGaulle sends in troops • 1950: Despite helping Minh in war vs. Japan – US decides to back France
Eisenhower in SE Asia • 1954: Eisenhower announces Domino Theory to justify $1 billion spent so far in Vietnam • If Communists win in Vietnam, all of Asia will fall to Communism • 1954: Eisenhower supports the formation of SEATO to combat communism in Asia
Vietnam becomes two nations • 1954: French are defeated at Dien Bien Phu • Geneva Accords ends the war, will split Vietnam at the 17th parallel North Vietnam= Communist & South Vietnam= non-communist, nationwide elections will happen in 1956 • Ho Chi Minh popular nationwide, S. Vietnam’s leader Ngo Dien Diem fears he will lose nationwide election • US encourages Diem not to participate in elections and declare his own independent nation • Nov 1955: Ho Chi Minh prepares for war, Eisenhower will send “advisors” to help Diem
