VERLAN Verlan is a form of French slang that consists of playing around with syllables Many verlan words have become so commonplace that they are used in everyday French To ‘verlan’ a word, separate it into syllables, reverse them and put the word back together Unnecessary letters are dropped, while other letters are added to make pronunciation logical There are no real rules

  2. Examples • L’envers [the reverse] – separate into l’en and vers. Invert them, put them together in a single word, then adjust the spelling: l’envers… l’en vers… versl’en… verslen… verlen… verlan • Pourri [rotten] …pou rri… rri pou… rripou Most single syllable words are just pronounced backwards: fou > ouf cool> looc

  3. Some common verlan terms • un beur [now ‘reub’]: Arabe • une cecla: classe • céfran: francais • chébran: branché [cool] • Une raquebar: baraque [house] • un kebla: black • un keuf [ now [feuk]: un flic • un keum: un mec • geudin: dingue [crazy] • Une gnolba: bagnole [old car]
