  3. PRACTICE!!!-Decide which question each underlined adverb answers. Where? When? In what way? To what extent? • One of California’s main attractions is the coastline, which stretches continuously along the western border of the state. • Some people enjoy watching the gray whales as these whales migrate yearly to the California coast. • Others intently view the tide pools for hours at a time. • The ocean life seems to disappear as the water rushes in and out.

Underline the adjective it modifies. California’s central valley has soil abundantly rich in nutrients. • The state’s warm weather allows for an unusually long growing season. • Farmers are able to grow many different kinds of fruits and vegetables. • The broccoli and spinach that are grown in California are dark green and nutritious. • Grapes and peaches are extremely sweet fruits that many people enjoy. • Plums and apricots are small fruits, but they have unusually large seeds.

Underline the adverb it modifies. • Many animals have adapted quite successfully to life in the California desert. • The grizzly bear almost entirely disappeared from the state in the 1920’s. • Cougars and bobcats too greatly populate the foothills and woodlands. • They often prey on herds of deer and other small animals. • The mountain lion population has only slightly increased over the past twenty years. • Reptiles slither rather silently through the underbrush.

Then, draw arrows pointing from the adverbs to the words they modify. • Trees have been effectively used for many things. • Loggers carefully cut down the necessary trees. • Often, the trees are taken to a sawmill. • The trees are made into lumber there. • This lumber is sometimes used to build homes.

  10. Adverb or Adjective?? Adverb Modifying Verb: Adjectives with –ly Endings: Lumberjacks work hard. He telephoned her very early that morning. Adjective Modifying Noun: Lumberjacks enjoy hard work. She was awakened by the early call. Most words ending in –ly are adverbs, but some are not Several adjectives also end in –ly. These adjectives are formed by adding –ly to nouns. A kingly feast. A friendly person.

PRACTICE!Adverb or Adjective? • Some fruit trees bloom earlier than others. • Usually, the blossoms don’t last long. • Sharing the fruit from one’s trees is a neighborly gesture. • The Japanese maple is slow to shed its leaves. • Its branches spread wide, shading a large area. • Another tree with wide branches is the elm. • The seeds of many trees are carried far away by winds.
